Nigeria, Azerbaijan Move To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Nigeria and Azerbaijan have discussed strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation on multilateral platforms during a telephone conversation between their foreign ministers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a post on its official X account on Monday, saying Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, held a telephone conversation with her Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, on October 5.

The ministry said the discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria-Azerbaijan ties and enhancing cooperation in multilateral fora.

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the telephone conversation, saying the ministers exchanged views on the prospects for developing bilateral relations, issues of mutual interest and cooperation on multilateral platforms.

The Azerbaijani ministry said the two sides discussed cooperation within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Non-Aligned Movement, Inter-Parliamentary Union and D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation.

They also stressed the importance of strengthening mutual support and coordination within the various multilateral platforms.

Bayramov said Azerbaijan considers the development of relations with African countries a priority of its foreign policy.

He also highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation with Nigeria in political, economic, humanitarian and other areas, including opportunities available to Nigerian citizens through Azerbaijan’s scholarship programmes.

The ministers also exchanged views on other issues on the regional and international agenda, according to the Azerbaijani ministry.
