Police Remove DPO As Suspected Cultists’ Outpost Renovation Sparks Probe

The Rivers State Police Command has relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another officer overseeing a police outpost of their duties following allegations that suspected cultists renovated the facility and celebrated its completion.
The officers have also been queried, while the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the renovation and the alleged involvement of police personnel.
The action followed a trending social media report and video allegedly showing suspected cultists visiting the Abuloma Police Outpost on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the renovation.
In a statement, the Command condemned any association between police facilities and suspected criminal groups, warning that such incidents could undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The police said the investigation would establish the identities of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, the officers who authorised the project, and whether established procedures were followed.
Investigators will also determine whether any police personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Force through their involvement in the project.
However, the Command clarified that it does not prohibit legitimate community support for improving police facilities.
Citing Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, the police said donations and contributions to the Police General Fund are permitted, provided they do not compromise police independence, professional standards or security.
The Command said the investigation would determine whether the renovation received the necessary approvals and whether appropriate checks were conducted on those who financed or facilitated it.
It added that no donation or assistance would shield anyone from investigation or prosecution if wrongdoing was established.
The police further warned that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures, while any criminal liability would be addressed in accordance with the law.
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances under which private individuals or groups can undertake renovation projects at police facilities, particularly where allegations of links to suspected criminal organisations have emerged.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to assist security operations across Rivers State.
