The Standard Bearers Take Handwashing Campaign To Abeokuta Market, Target Disease Prevention

A community-based organisation, The Standard Bearers, has taken its handwashing awareness campaign to Iberekodo Market in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, urging traders to embrace proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases.
The campaign, led by the organisation’s president, Comrade Taofiq Bello, was organised as part of activities marking the 2026 World Handwashing Day, observed annually on October 15 to promote handwashing with soap and clean water.
During the sensitisation exercise, members of the organisation engaged traders and market leaders on the importance of regular handwashing, particularly in busy commercial environments where people interact closely and handle food, money and other essential commodities.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the health risks associated with poor hand hygiene and encourage behavioural changes that would help create a safer and healthier market environment.
A member of the organisation, AbdulHameed AbdulFatai, said the exercise featured demonstrations of proper handwashing techniques and sensitisation on the need to make hand hygiene a regular habit among traders and other market users.
He explained that markets required particular attention because of the high volume of human interaction and the frequent handling of goods and cash, which could contribute to the spread of germs when appropriate hygiene measures were neglected.
The organisation said taking the campaign directly to Iberekodo Market was part of its commitment to making preventive health education accessible to residents and encouraging practical measures to reduce the risk of infections at the community level.
The Standard Bearers added that the initiative was part of its sustained handwashing campaign, which it said had been carried out consistently for more than 20 years.
According to the organisation, the exercise reinforced the need for individuals and communities to prioritise simple but effective hygiene practices capable of reducing the burden of preventable diseases.
The United Nations Children’s Fund has consistently highlighted the importance of handwashing with soap as a critical public health intervention, particularly in reducing the transmission of diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections.
Proper handwashing is especially important after using the toilet, before preparing or eating food, and after handling waste, as these practices help reduce exposure to disease-causing germs.
The campaign also highlighted the need for sustained public enlightenment beyond the annual commemoration, urging community-based organisations, market associations and relevant public health authorities to support access to clean water, soap and appropriate handwashing facilities.
It stressed that awareness campaigns would achieve greater impact when complemented by the provision of basic hygiene infrastructure to enable traders and customers to practise what they had been taught.
World Handwashing Day is observed globally every October 15 to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing with soap and encourage lasting improvements in hygiene practices.
The 2026 commemoration provided another opportunity for organisations and communities to promote hand hygiene as a simple, affordable and effective means of protecting public health.
