President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission, with the appointments subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The nominations were announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu has urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process in view of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
Among the nominees is Dr Bala Bila, who has been reappointed as the national commissioner representing the North-East geopolitical zone.
Other nominees for national commissioner positions include Professor Mustapha Aliu, who is to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the representative of the North-West, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, who is to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the representative of the North-Central.
The President also nominated the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, as the national commissioner representing the South-West.
Babalola is expected to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure will expire on October 24.
For the resident electoral commissioner positions, Tinubu nominated a retired permanent secretary, Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, to represent Ekiti State, while Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, from Jigawa State, was nominated to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The nominations come as INEC prepares for the next general elections, with the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees required before they can assume their respective positions.
The President’s call for an expedited confirmation process underscores the need to fill the vacancies ahead of the forthcoming polls.
INEC is constitutionally responsible for organising, conducting and supervising elections in Nigeria, making the appointment of its national commissioners and resident electoral commissioners central to the commission’s operations across the country.
