Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has said the 2027 general elections will go beyond party lines, describing it as a contest between Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television, Kingibe argued that growing economic hardship and widespread dissatisfaction could shape the outcome of the next election cycle.
According to her, “2027, regardless of parties, it’s an alliance; it’s the people versus the ruling party.” She added that the limited hope many Nigerians currently hold onto is tied to the expectation that conditions in the country could still improve.
The senator warned that persistent unemployment, poverty, and hunger—especially among young people—could increase public anger if not urgently addressed. She stressed that attempts to weaken opposition voices would undermine democratic balance and could deepen national tension.
Kingibe further questioned why the ruling party would be concerned about opposition strength, claiming it already holds significant political advantage at the state level. She suggested that confidence in electoral dominance should reduce any perceived pressure to suppress competing parties.
She also commented on internal matters within opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Party (ADC), insisting that party leadership disputes and decisions are internal issues protected by law. She referenced previous court rulings and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in observing party conventions and internal processes.
Kingibe maintained that documented procedures and INEC-monitored meetings validate recent leadership changes within political parties, arguing that opposition realignments remain lawful when properly conducted.
