The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said he accepted the leadership role after what he described as a strong personal conviction and spiritual assurance.
Speaking in Abuja at a thanksgiving and end-of-tenure service organised by the Nigerian Baptist Convention for its outgoing president, Israel Akanji, and his wife, Victoria, Amupitan said he would not have taken up the job without what he believes was divine direction.
According to him, his decision was influenced by a message he interpreted as coming from God, which encouraged him not to fear and assured him of strength and support.
He said the message, which he described as clear and compelling, played a key role in his acceptance of the position: that he should not be dismayed because he would be helped and upheld.
Amupitan noted that this conviction has continued to sustain him in office, especially in the face of the pressures that come with managing elections in a complex democratic system.
He added that he believes divine guidance has helped him navigate challenges since assuming leadership of the commission, stressing that difficulties are surmountable with faith.
The INEC chairman also called on Nigerians to pray for the commission and for the success of the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that the polls could set a new standard.
He further reflected on public service, warning that roles of responsibility should only be taken when there is a clear sense of direction, adding that personal conviction and perceived divine backing remain essential to his experience in office.
