Final-Year Covenant University Student Dies After Collapsing During Football Training
A 500-level student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked renewed concerns about student health monitoring and emergency response systems in higher institutions.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the university confirmed that the student actively participated in the training before stepping aside after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.
Shortly after leaving the pitch, teammates reportedly noticed him gasping for breath, prompting an immediate emergency response.
He was quickly taken to the university’s medical centre, located near the training ground, where medical personnel initiated resuscitation using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.
The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the deceased as a diligent and vibrant student, noting that his passing is a significant loss to the university community.
According to preliminary findings, the institution stated that a previously undiagnosed heart condition may have contributed to the incident.
The university maintained that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, adding that all required emergency equipment was available and properly deployed.
It also noted that members of the university management have remained in close contact with the bereaved family, offering support during this difficult time.
The institution extended its condolences to the family, stating that the tragic incident has left the entire campus community in mourning.
