Ogun East Political Tensions Rise as Daniel’s Loyalists Challenge Abiodun’s Endorsement Strategy
Political tensions are mounting in Ogun East Senatorial District as fresh alignments ahead of the next election cycle spark disagreements among key stakeholders. Supporters of former Ogun State governor and current senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), have openly criticised recent endorsement efforts believed to favour Governor Dapo Abiodun.
In a statement issued by a supporter, Mr. Adebola Odunsi from Odogbolu, concerns were raised over endorsement meetings reportedly held in Ijebu Ode. The gatherings were described as “selective,” with claims that attendance was largely restricted to political appointees and individuals aligned with the governor.
The group compared the meetings to a separate endorsement event for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” which they said attracted a broader mix of political actors, including former and current officeholders as well as aspirants. They argued that the latter demonstrated greater inclusiveness in participation.
Supporters of Senator Daniel also alleged that the governor’s camp is showing signs of “political desperation,” though this claim remains unverified.
They maintained that Daniel is well-positioned to secure a second term in the Senate, pointing to what they described as his track record and sustained political influence in Ogun East. According to them, retaining his representation is vital to advancing regional interests, including the long-standing push for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State.
The statement further touched on past political grievances related to state creation efforts, drawing parallels between earlier campaigns and ongoing advocacy within the district.
Reaffirming their stance, the group expressed confidence in Daniel’s electoral prospects, insisting that voter sentiment would not be swayed by political manoeuvring.
Observers say the developments highlight deeper divisions and shifting alliances within Ogun East, as political figures intensify preparations for upcoming elections.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office has not issued an official response to the allegations.
