The Ogun State Police Command has impounded six vehicles and removed shanties as well as other road obstructions in Sango-Ota and the Ijebu-Ode Toll Gate axis under its ongoing traffic enforcement exercise tagged Operation “No Traffic Gridlock”.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the operation was part of renewed efforts to decongest major highways and restore free flow of traffic across the state.
The exercise, carried out on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, involved coordinated night patrols and early morning enforcement actions across identified congestion points in both locations.
In the Sango-Ota axis, the Command said the Area Commander led a series of enforcement operations targeted at illegal structures and encroachments on road setbacks.
Babaseyi stated, “coordinated night operations were carried out led by the Area Commander, Sango Ota, to remove shanties and clear illegal structures obstructing road setbacks and contributing to persistent traffic congestion.”
It added that follow-up operations carried out early in the morning further strengthened compliance efforts.
“Early morning enforcement operations commencing as early as 0500hrs led to the clearance of major obstruction points and the impoundment of six (6) vehicles found in violation of traffic regulations,” the Command stated.
The police noted that the clearance exercise had already begun to improve vehicular movement in the axis, adding that sustained monitoring would continue to prevent a return of illegal structures and obstructions.
Similarly, at the Ijebu-Ode Toll Gate axis, operatives carried out what the Command described as a sustained sanitisation exercise aimed at tackling indiscriminate parking of heavy-duty trucks and roadside trading along the highway.
The statement said, “the Ijebu Ode Toll Gate axis was sanitised through sustained enforcement operations led by the Area Commander, Ijebu Ode, targeted at indiscriminate parking of heavy-duty trucks and roadside trading along the highway.”
It added that the intervention resulted in the clearance of truck build-ups and other obstructions that had contributed to persistent traffic delays in the area.
The Command stressed that enforcement would remain continuous in order to sustain the gains recorded.
The Commissioner of Police warned motorists and traders against violating traffic laws, stressing that offenders would be prosecuted.
He said, “illegal parking, roadside trading, and obstruction of highways will not be tolerated, adding that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
Ojajuni reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the operation, stating that it would continue until full compliance and seamless traffic flow are achieved across all affected corridors in the state.
