The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has ordered the establishment of a police post at the Ibogun Campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University following a violent armed robbery attack on students that left several injured and valuables carted away.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Monday after the CP’s visit, stating that the directive followed a high-level security visit to the campus, where the police chief met university authorities, community leaders, student representatives and sister security agencies.
The visit was prompted by a pre-dawn raid in which about 12 armed men reportedly invaded student hostels on campus. The attackers were said to have forcefully broken into rooms, assaulted occupants, and stolen phones, jewellery and other valuables.
Witness accounts from students also indicated that the assailants were armed with guns and machetes and injured some victims during the operation. A vehicle reportedly stolen during the attack was later abandoned by the suspects due to lack of fuel.
The incident triggered renewed fears among students, who said the area had experienced repeated invasions over the past three months, forcing some to protest and demand urgent intervention from security agencies and school authorities.
During his visit, Ojajuni held a security meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, the Provost of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, Professor Bashir Olufemi Odufuwa, traditional ruler Oba Timothy Sowumi, student leaders and community stakeholders.
He assured them of immediate action, stressing that the Command had reviewed the security situation and would reinforce policing around the university and surrounding communities.
In a key resolution from the visit, the CP announced the establishment of a dedicated police post within the university axis to improve response time and strengthen visibility.
The police statement read, “The CP assured all stakeholders that the Command has carefully assessed the security situation and will immediately strengthen policing around the university and adjoining communities.
“As part of the outcome of the visit, CP Bode Ojajuni announced the establishment of a police post around the university community to enhance rapid response, improve police visibility, and strengthen community policing initiatives.”
Ojajuni also directed increased patrols in the area and called for stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps and other security stakeholders.
Recall Ogun spokesperson confirmed the attack in Ibogun campus, noting that investigations were ongoing and additional personnel had been deployed to the area.
The university management also said it was working with security agencies to address the breach and restore calm, while students expressed hope that the new measures would end the recurring attacks.
