The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has assured Nigerians of improved electricity supply following a significant increase in the country’s national grid capacity.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, made the pledge as he commenced a second five-year tenure, recently approved by President Bola Tinubu. He spoke during his first town hall meeting with staff at the company’s headquarters in Abuja.
Abdulaziz described his reappointment as a renewed call to duty, noting that it aligns with the Federal Government’s reform drive in the power sector. He emphasized that his administration would focus on delivering measurable and sustainable improvements in electricity transmission.
According to him, Nigeria’s grid capacity has grown from about 5,000 megawatts in 2015 to over 8,700 megawatts, reflecting consistent investment in infrastructure. This progress, he said, includes the installation of new transformers and the completion of several 330kV and 132kV transmission projects across the country.
He also highlighted collaborations with international development partners such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and Agence Française de Développement, which have supported ongoing upgrades in the transmission network.
Providing further details, Abdulaziz revealed that more than 82 transformers were installed within 23 months, including 15 units of 300MVA transformers deployed in the latter half of 2025. These installations covered major transmission stations in cities including Lagos, Osogbo, Jos, Gombe, Kano, Asaba, Benin, and Abuja.
He added that several substations have been reinforced with high-capacity transformers, helping to improve grid stability, reduce system disturbances, and enhance coordination across regions.
The TCN boss commended staff and management for their contributions, attributing the achievements to dedication and resilience.
Looking ahead, Abdulaziz said the priority would be to ensure that infrastructure improvements translate into reliable electricity supply for Nigerians. He stressed the need for stable and consistent bulk power delivery to distribution companies for onward supply to consumers.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services, Abiodun Afolabi Fadahunsi, said the town hall was aimed at strengthening communication between leadership and employees. She noted that transparency and alignment are critical for meeting the demands of the power sector.
