Nigerian journalist Rufai Oseni has advised Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to remain cautious about his 2027 governorship ambition, despite receiving endorsement from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Speaking during a programme on ARISE Television, Oseni reacted to Sanwo-Olu’s recent declaration backing Hamzat as his preferred successor ahead of the next gubernatorial election.
The endorsement reportedly followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship race before members of the State Executive Council and key political stakeholders.
However, Oseni stressed that political dynamics in Lagos suggest that such endorsements may not be decisive without the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, widely regarded as the most influential political figure in the state.
He argued that ultimate political authority in Lagos often rests with Tinubu, regardless of backing from the governor or the Governance Advisory Council (GAC). Oseni added that several aspirants have previously claimed to enjoy Tinubu’s endorsement, urging Hamzat to remain vigilant until any support is publicly confirmed.
Citing past political developments, Oseni referenced the experience of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the leadership controversy involving Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa as examples of how political expectations in the state can shift unexpectedly.
He maintained that Lagos politics has consistently revolved around Tinubu’s influence, warning that no aspirant should assume victory without clear backing from the president.
