2027: Fubara Absent As APC Screens 14 Governors, Tinubu’s Presidential Challenger

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded the screening of 14 serving governors and a prominent presidential aspirant ahead of the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the noticeable absence of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, sparking fresh political speculation.

The screening exercise, which took place at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, was part of the party’s internal process aimed at positioning candidates and consolidating support structures ahead of upcoming political contests. Party leaders described the exercise as crucial to strengthening unity within the ruling party and ensuring that aspirants meet constitutional and party requirements.

Among those screened were several incumbent governors seeking re-election or political advancement within the APC structure. Also screened was a notable challenger expected to contest against President Bola Tinubu in the party’s presidential race, a development that has intensified conversations about possible internal competition within the ruling party ahead of 2027.

However, political observers were quick to note the absence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the exercise. Fubara’s nonappearance has fueled speculation over his political future and his relationship with the APC leadership amid the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.

Although no official explanation was immediately provided for his absence, party insiders hinted that consultations and alignments may still be ongoing behind closed doors. Some analysts believe the development could signal uncertainty over Fubara’s political direction, while others argue it may simply reflect unresolved negotiations within the Rivers political landscape.

The APC leadership maintained that the screening process was transparent and in line with party guidelines. Officials also expressed confidence that the exercise would help position the party strongly ahead of the next election cycle.

Meanwhile, supporters of President Tinubu have continued mobilising across different states, insisting that the president remains the party’s strongest candidate for 2027 despite emerging challengers within the APC fold. Political stakeholders are now closely watching how the party manages internal rivalries and alliances in the coming months.

The screening exercise is expected to be followed by consultations, endorsements and strategic meetings as the APC intensifies preparations for future elections.
