A former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State chapter, Adesuwa Ehimuan, has officially declared her intention to contest for the Oredo East Constituency seat in the Edo State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ehimuan made her declaration before APC leaders, ward stakeholders, women groups, and community members across the constituency, marking her transition from journalism and civic advocacy into active politics.
Speaking during the event, she said her ambition is driven by a desire to represent ordinary people and amplify their voices in government. According to her, the move is about addressing the challenges faced by market women, unemployed youths, and young girls seeking better opportunities.
She noted that after years of advocating for the people outside government, she is now ready to take that fight into the legislative chamber where key decisions are made.
Widely recognised in Edo State for her work in youth empowerment, women’s inclusion, and community development, Ehimuan enters the race with a strong background in grassroots mobilisation and leadership.
During her tenure as NAWOJ chairperson, she promoted gender-sensitive journalism, led campaigns against violence targeting women in politics, and organised leadership programmes for young people. She also engaged with institutions at both state and national levels on issues such as electoral integrity, gender-based violence, and the eradication of female genital mutilation.
Outlining her plans, she said her legislative agenda will focus on four key areas: improving access to quality education, boosting grassroots economic empowerment, strengthening social welfare for vulnerable groups, and expanding opportunities for women and youths.
Ehimuan stressed the need for responsive and visible representation, promising consistent engagement with all communities in Oredo East beyond election periods.
She called on APC leaders, delegates, and residents of the constituency to support her candidacy, which she described as rooted in service, unity, and collective progress. She also urged women to take a more active role in politics, not just as voters but as leaders.
Her campaign, she added, is built on transparency, inclusiveness, and grassroots accountability, aligning with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda aimed at improving governance and citizen participation in Edo State.
