The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has indicated that the 2027 general election may be his last attempt to become Nigeria’s president.
Obi made the remark during an interview on Nevon HQ while responding to a question from a secondary school student who asked whether he would continue contesting for the presidency if he fails to win in 2027.
According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria’s political zoning arrangement, which traditionally rotates power between the North and the South, heavily influences his decision.
He explained that if he contests the 2027 election and loses, the presidency could shift to the North in 2031. By the time political power potentially rotates back to the South, he said he would be about 78 years old and may no longer be interested in pursuing the nation’s highest office.
Obi stated that, based on the current political structure, 2027 appears likely to be his final serious shot at the presidency.
“I was asked by a secondary school student if I still intend to run for president again if I contest in 2027 and don’t win, and I said my answer depends on how events unfold,” Obi said.
He noted that Nigeria’s zoning principle plays a significant role in political calculations, adding that a loss in 2027 could mean waiting through another cycle before the presidency returns to the South.
Obi, however, acknowledged that political circumstances can change. He said there remains a slight possibility of another presidential run if the office stays in the South after 2027, although he stressed that it is not something he is banking on.
