The Federal Government has directed that individuals awarded honorary degrees must no longer prefix their names with the title “Dr.”
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a media briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to the minister, the directive was approved at a Federal Executive Council meeting held on April 30. He explained that the move is aimed at restoring credibility and public trust in the use of academic titles across the country.
Alausa noted that the increasing misuse of honorary degrees has raised concerns, citing instances where such awards are allegedly given for political patronage or financial incentives. He also criticised the practice of conferring honorary degrees on serving public officials, describing it as a violation of established ethical standards.
He stressed that the new policy is part of broader efforts by the government to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s academic system and ensure that titles reflect genuine scholarly achievement.
