Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have intensified security operations in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State following an attack by suspected Fulani gunmen on communities in the area.
According to Zagagola Makama, the attack occurred around Chenhen and Dum villages in Bachi District of Riyom LGA at about 7:40 pm on May 10.
Security sources said the violence erupted hours after nine cows were reportedly killed and five others injured during an earlier attack on herders in the Gero area of Jos South Local Government Area.
According to the sources, the cattle were attacked by suspected Berom militia members.
A herder identified as Aliyu Yusuf also sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and was rushed for medical treatment.
Sources disclosed that troops responding to the situation also came under heavy gunfire from the attackers during operations in the area.
Security personnel later intensified clearance and patrol operations across affected communities.
During continued operations on the morning of May 11, troops reportedly discovered two corpses identified as Peter Dung Dachung and Amose Danbwarang.
The bodies were later evacuated by family members for burial.
Security officials said aggressive patrols and manhunt operations were ongoing to track down the attackers and prevent further violence.
According to the sources, security presence has also been strengthened in surrounding communities to forestall a breakdown of law and order.
Plateau State has witnessed recurring clashes involving farming and herding communities, with Riyom and parts of Jos South remaining among the flashpoints of the crisis.
