Museveni Takes Oath For Seventh Term As Uganda President, Extends 40-year Rule
Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, was on Tuesday sworn in for another five-year term, extending his four-decade rule over the East African country.
The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, following his victory in the January 2026 presidential election.
Papers News reports that Museveni was declared the winner of the election with 71.65 per cent of the vote, defeating his main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who polled 24.72 per cent.
The result, however, was rejected by Wine, who alleged irregularities and described the election as fraudulent.
The election was also marked by opposition complaints, security tension and a days-long internet shutdown.
Museveni has ruled Uganda since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
His latest inauguration means he will remain in office until 2031, if he completes the new five-year term.
Born in 1944 in the Mbarara area of Uganda, Museveni began his early education at Kyamate Boys School in 1953 before proceeding to Mbarara High School in 1959.
He later attended Ntare School in 1961 after his family moved from Ntungamo, then within the British Protectorate of Uganda.
Museveni studied political science at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he was involved in student activism and helped form the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front.
