Veteran journalist and prominent politician, Dele Momodu has criticised what he described as the “bullying” of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by online critics and political opponents over the presidential ambition of Peter Obi.
Momodu gave the reaction in a statement shared via his official X handle on Monday.
He reminded critics that it was Atiku who gave Obi his first major national platform by selecting him as his vice-presidential running mate on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in 2019.
He expressed disappointment that a man who helped elevate Obi is now being targeted by what he termed “fake Obidients” and agent provocateurs
“It is extremely sad that a man who gave PETER OBI his first Vice Presidential ticket is being bullied in this manner.
“I wish to believe this is the handiwork of fake OBIDIENTS and agent provocateur,” he wrote.
Speaking later during an X Space discussion, Momodu addressed the 2023 presidential election, regional voting dynamics, and internal opposition politics, in remarks that sparked mixed reactions online.
He questioned the narrative that Obi was denied victory in the election, pointing to the strong results recorded in his traditional support base.
“You said Obi won and they did not allow him to take power. In 2023, Peter Obi had almost 100 per cent of the votes from his territory and the votes were recorded, yet you said he was rigged,” he said.
Momodu also weighed in on the challenge of building nationwide political support, particularly across regions.
“Northerners will not die for any southern candidate,” he said, a remark that drew backlash from some listeners who interpreted it as dismissive of Obi’s prospects in the region.
Defending Atiku’s political relevance, Momodu described him as experienced and resilient, noting his performance in the last election.
“In the last election, whether you like him or not, he came second. I am proud of him because he stayed focused. If he wins, he wins… he still remains a former Vice President of Nigeria,” he said.
He added that the next electoral cycle could be decisive for Atiku’s political future.
“This one is the last one; if he loses the primary, then that is the end,” he said.
Momodu also cautioned against political hostility and online abuse, urging supporters across divides to maintain civility.
“I do not care… it is your right to say whatever you want about Atiku. I believe agent provocateurs are trying to penetrate into our party. We will support whoever wins the ticket,” he said.
He further stressed the need for respectful political engagement, including towards President Bola Tinubu.
“Do not let us behave like thugs. I will not agree to anyone abusing Tinubu on this platform. Saying mean things about people is a reflection of who you are,” he added.
Momodu, who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after leaving the PDP, continues to position Atiku as a central figure in the opposition’s strategy, describing himself as the “last man standing” in support of the former Vice President.
