Zenith Bank Marks World Environment Day with Major Clean-Up Initiative Across Lagos
Zenith Bank Plc has commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day with a two-phase environmental clean-up exercise across Lagos State, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility and community development.
The initiative, held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” featured coordinated clean-up activities on land and waterways as part of the bank’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.
The first phase of the exercise took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, when staff members of the bank participated in a community clean-up operation along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Employees cleared waste from public spaces, encouraged proper waste disposal practices and engaged members of the community on the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
The exercise formed part of Zenith Bank’s efforts to promote environmental awareness while encouraging collective action toward cleaner and healthier communities.
The second phase was conducted on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi, Lagos. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
The waterways clean-up focused on removing marine debris and waste materials from the water channels while supporting ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to improve environmental quality and strengthen climate resilience across the state.
Speaking on the initiative, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, said environmental sustainability remains a core component of the bank’s operations and long-term strategy.
“At Zenith Bank, sustainability is integral to how we operate. Clearing our streets and our waterways is a practical reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and one we are proud to take up alongside LAWMA and LASWA.
Through these exercises, we are taking deliberate action to preserve our communities, support climate action and inspire others to act. Our operations will continue to align with global environmental standards as we build a more sustainable future for Nigeria and Africa,” she stated.
The initiative reflects Zenith Bank’s ongoing commitment to embedding sustainability principles into its business operations while contributing to environmental conservation efforts within the communities where it operates.
Over the years, the bank has continued to integrate ESG considerations into its corporate strategy through investments in environmentally responsible projects, energy-efficient operations and community-focused programmes aimed at promoting sustainable development.
The lender noted that its sustainability efforts support several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 on Climate Action.
