Abbas Ibrahim, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Trustee for Zone A, has resigned to contest the deputy governorship election on the platform of Labour Party (LP) in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
He made this known in a resignation letter presented to the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting holding in Dutse, Jigawa State.
A copy of the letter was made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Kano.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ibrahim was the immediate past Chairman of NUJ Kano State Council.
He said the decision was to enable him to devote adequate time and energy to the new responsibility and actively participate in the political process.
“This decision did not come lightly. I have taken time for sincere self-reflection and have concluded that, at this stage of my journey, I must respond to the call to participate more directly in politics and contribute my quota towards building a better society.
“I believe that journalism, trade unionism, and politics, though different platforms, are all avenues through which we can serve humanity, defend justice, promote the interests of the people, and contribute to the development of our society.
“I am, therefore, stepping into this new responsibility with the same spirit of service, courage, commitment, and comradeship that has guided my years in the NUJ and the labour movement,” Ibrahim said.
He expressed appreciation to the NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, the entire NEC, and the Kano Council Chairman, Suleiman Dederi, for the confidence reposed in him and for giving him the opportunity to serve in that capacity.
“My years in the NUJ have been a remarkable journey of service, struggle, friendship, and solidarity.
“I remain eternally grateful to the comrades who stood with me through the years, shared both the challenges and victories, and made the journey worthwhile.
“As I embark on this new chapter, I carry with me the values and lessons of our comradeship.
“I may be leaving an elective position in the NUJ, but I am not leaving the brotherhood of comrades,” ibrahim said.
