AANI celebrates IBB at 85, hails his contribution to national development

The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has congratulated former military Head of State, retired General Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday.

The President of AANI, Amb. Emmanuel Okafor, conveyed the association’s felicitations in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Ngama, on Monday in Abuja.

The association described Babangida as a distinguished elder statesman, military icon and one of the most consequential figures in Nigeria’s political history.

AANI said Babangida’s military and political career had significantly shaped Nigeria’s political, economic and social development.

It recalled that Babangida served as Nigeria’s Military President from 1985 to 1993, during which his administration implemented several major national and economic reforms.

The association highlighted Nigeria’s role in the signing of the Abuja Treaty establishing the African Economic Community, as well as the country’s leadership in regional peace efforts through ECOMOG.

It also cited economic liberalisation, privatisation and other institutional reforms as notable aspects of Babangida’s administration.

AANI noted that Babangida was a member of Senior Executive Course 1 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in 1979.

It said his participation in the pioneering course reflected his longstanding commitment to strategic thinking, policy development and national leadership.

The association said Babangida had continued to contribute to national discourse as an elder statesman after leaving office.

It described his decades of service at the highest levels of military command and national leadership as a significant chapter in Nigeria’s history.

“AANI proudly celebrates this exceptional elder statesman, military icon and proud pioneer of our great association,” the statement said.

The association prayed for continued good health, peace, strength and fulfilment for the former Military President.

It also wished Babangida many more years of purposeful contribution to Nigeria’s development.
