Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says his administration has not taken a single fresh loan since he took office, even as the state continues to pay about ₦6.7 billion monthly to service debts left behind by previous administrations.
Sani disclosed this on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed questions about how his government has managed the state’s finances amid rising revenue.
He said the heavy monthly debt burden has not stopped his administration from pushing forward with development projects across Kaduna.
“Since I became governor, I’ve not borrowed with one kobo,” Sani said, attributing the feat to discipline in public spending and careful selection of priority projects.
“It’s about being prudent. It’s about selecting or being very careful in where you invest the money,” he added.
The governor also highlighted what he called notable progress under his administration in agriculture, education, infrastructure, skills development, and security.
On education, Sani revealed that a household-mapping exercise conducted by his government uncovered about 550,000 out-of-school children across the state. He said more than 300,000 of them have since been returned to classrooms, with the exercise still ongoing.
According to him, the data from the mapping exercise is now guiding the government’s interventions, ensuring resources are directed to where they are most needed rather than relying on guesswork.
He described the strategy as a deliberate move to tackle Kaduna’s out-of-school children crisis using verified data instead of estimates.
