Elder statesman and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.
His death was announced on Saturday, September 12, by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, in a statement signed by Humwashi Wonosikou.
Tukur, who served as the first Civilian Governor of the defunct Gongola State, was also a renowned international businessman. According to the statement, he died on Saturday after a brief illness.
Governor Fintiri described his death as a monumental loss to Adamawa State and Nigeria, praising his courage, foresight, patriotism and lifelong commitment to public service.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a colossus who made remarkable contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria. His wealth of experience, wisdom and commitment to public service earned him a place of honour in our national history,” Fintiri said.
He added that he would personally miss Tukur’s wise counsel and the depth of experience he brought to state and national affairs, noting that his passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
The Governor extended condolences to Tukur’s family, friends, associates and the people of Adamawa State, urging them to draw strength from his legacy of service and leadership.
In his honour, Fintiri has declared three days of mourning across Adamawa State, during which government flags will fly at half-mast.
He prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus, and grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
