Bella Shmurda Reveals How He Funded His Music Career

Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has opened up about the difficult measures he took while struggling to finance his music career in the early days.

The singer made the revelation during an interview on Echo Room, where he recalled stealing a bicycle belonging to his neighbour’s son while living in Okoko, Lagos.

According to Bella Shmurda, he took the bicycle at night and later sold it in Alaba for ₦7,000. He said he used the money to pay for studio sessions as he worked to establish himself in the music industry.

The singer explained that financial difficulties at the time pushed him to take the drastic step in order to continue recording music.

Bella Shmurda also disclosed that he later reconnected with the boy whose bicycle he had taken and attempted to make amends by buying him a new bicycle.

Reflecting on the incident, the singer admitted that his mother would probably be unhappy if she heard him publicly recounting the story.

He said: “If my mom hears this, she’ll be angry. When we lived in Okoko, I once stole my neighbour’s son’s bicycle and hid it at night. I sold it in Alaba for ₦7,000 to pay for studio sessions. I’ve seen him since and bought him a new bicycle.”

The revelation offers a glimpse into the challenges Bella Shmurda faced before gaining recognition in Nigeria’s music industry.
