Fayemi Identifies Five Key Forces Politicians Must Win Over To Succeed In Elections
Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has identified five major forces he described as “election gods” that politicians must satisfy to improve their chances of winning elections in Nigeria.
Fayemi listed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, the judiciary, non-state security actors and financial resources as critical factors that can influence electoral success.
He made the remarks in How To Win Elections in Nigeria, a book written by media entrepreneur and Best of Nollywood Awards convener, Seun Oloketuyi.
According to Fayemi, winning an election requires more than voter support or a strong campaign organisation. He said politicians must understand the political environment where they are contesting and develop relationships with party leaders, elected officials, political appointees and other influential stakeholders.
Reflecting on his political journey in Ekiti State, Fayemi said his political career faced significant challenges, including opposition from those who regarded him as an outsider.
He explained that strong convictions, external political networks, grassroots mobilisation and a clear policy agenda helped him overcome some of those challenges.
Fayemi also stressed the importance of controlling a candidate’s political narrative, arguing that good performance in office alone does not guarantee electoral success.
“In politics, your work does not speak for you, no matter how well you have performed. You have to constantly communicate with your various audiences: the intellectual elite, social media spaces, and traditional grassroots publics,” he said.
The former governor further advised politicians to engage smaller political parties and ensure they have adequate representation at polling units.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining relationships with independent election observers, particularly where disputes arise after an election.
Fayemi said these strategies, alongside effective communication and strong grassroots engagement, are essential for politicians seeking electoral victory in Nigeria.
