The Federal Ministry of Works has announced the closure of some sections of the first Niger Bridge for 14 days to allow maintenance works to be carried out.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra, Mr Timothy Emenike, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Awka on Friday.
According to Emenike, the affected sections of the bridge will be closed from September 7 to September 21.
He advised members of the public, particularly motorists who regularly use the bridge, to take note of the closure and make alternative arrangements during the maintenance period.
Emenike urged motorists and commuters to use the second Niger Bridge while the work is ongoing.
He said the maintenance would include the repair of sections of the bridge that had been vandalised.
The controller expressed regret over the inconvenience the closure could cause motorists and commuters, adding that efforts would be made to complete the work as quickly as possible.
According to him, the maintenance activities will be carried out during the day and at night to ensure speedy completion.
He also appealed to motorists to cooperate with the authorities and comply with diversion signs to minimise delays and discomfort throughout the period.
