Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed fresh concerns about his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Anambra State governor said he was uncertain whether he would still be alive when Nigerians go to the polls in 2027.
Obi spoke during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday while discussing the political environment ahead of the election and the need for a peaceful democratic process.
He said he had been subjected to petitions and investigations in different places, adding that he could not predict what might happen to him before the election.
“As I speak to you, I have also been petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. Like I said before, I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” he said.
The NDC candidate did not provide specific details during the interview on the petitions or investigations he referred to.
However, he said the situation had raised concerns about his personal safety as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi said he was relying on God for protection and urged politicians to avoid actions that could create tension or undermine the democratic process.
“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added.
Obi also directed his appeal at state governors, asking them to provide a level playing field for presidential candidates and other political aspirants.
He acknowledged that governors were entitled to support candidates of their choice but argued that such support should not prevent other candidates from campaigning in their states.
According to him, political competition should not be allowed to create hostility among Nigerians.
“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.
The former Anambra governor further recalled his experience while in office, saying his administration allowed politicians from opposition parties to campaign in the state.
Obi said such politicians were permitted to operate even when they were campaigning against his preferred candidates.
He used the experience to make a broader argument for tolerance among politicians ahead of the 2027 election.
The NDC presidential candidate has repeatedly spoken about the need for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
In July, Obi also raised concerns about alleged pressure on opposition figures and claimed that his activities had been deliberately frustrated by the Federal Government.
During an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo at the time, Obi said he feared that he might not survive until the 2027 election.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you,” he said.
He also alleged that government actions had affected his personal activities and business interests.
The claims were not accompanied by evidence in the interview, while the Federal Government had not publicly accepted the allegations.
The latest statement on Arise TV is therefore another expression of concern from the former governor about his security as the country moves towards the next year’s election.
