Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned traditional rulers across the state against taking sides in political matters, saying traditional institutions should remain neutral and serve as fathers to all.
Makinde gave the warning on Saturday in Eruwa during the first coronation anniversary of Samuel Adegbola, the Eleruwa of Eruwa.
The governor, who was honoured with the chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland at the event, stressed that monarchs who venture into partisan politics risk losing the respect attached to their traditional positions.
According to him, traditional rulers should embrace politicians from different parties as their children and avoid actions that could compromise the neutrality of their offices.
Makinde said, “The traditional institutions should accept us all as their children.
“But any traditional institution that interferes in politics, we will insult them. If they can cross into politics, we will abuse them.”
The governor also spoke about his ambition to become Nigeria’s president in the 2027 election.
Makinde, who is the presidential candidate of the Accord Party (APM) according to the report, said he was prepared to travel across the country to seek the support of Nigerians.
He maintained that his presidential ambition was not limited to any particular region, adding that he would engage with citizens across Nigeria to explain his plans and vision for the country.
He said his campaign would involve extensive consultations with Nigerians in different parts of the country as he seeks support for his ambition to lead Nigeria.
