NGX Trading Volume Jumps 44% to 4.69 Billion Shares in Five Days

Trading volume on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) jumped 44 percent to approximately 4.69 billion shares in the five trading sessions ended September 25, 2026, according to Investors King calculations based on daily market data.

The 4.69 billion shares traded between September 21 and September 25 represented an increase of approximately 1.44 billion shares when compared with the 3.249 billion shares recorded in the previous week.

The increase translates to a 44.3 percent week-on-week expansion in trading volume, pointing to stronger activity across the equities market during the period.

Investors exchanged 574.19 million shares on Monday, September 21, before volume increased to 837.26 million shares on Tuesday.

Activity accelerated further on Wednesday, when investors traded 1.59 billion shares, the largest daily volume during the five-day period.

Trading volume subsequently moderated to 978.29 million shares on Thursday and 708.85 million shares on Friday.

Despite the sharp increase in the number of shares traded during the week, the value of transactions recorded a much smaller increase.

Investors King calculations showed that equities worth approximately N240.96 billion changed hands during the five sessions, compared with N237.99 billion in the previous week.

This represented an increase of about 1.3 percent, creating a wide divergence between the 44.3 percent expansion in volume and the growth in transaction value.

The number of deals also declined during the period.

A total of 261,671 deals were recorded across the five sessions, down approximately 9.1 percent from 287,919 deals in the preceding week.

The combination of higher share volume and fewer deals indicates that the average number of shares exchanged per transaction increased during the period.

Wednesday contributed heavily to the week’s elevated volume after investors exchanged 1.59 billion shares worth N45.82 billion in 49,836 deals.

Friday, however, produced the week’s highest daily transaction value at N58.35 billion, despite volume moderating to 708.85 million shares.

The increase in trading activity came as the equities market extended its advance.

The NGX All-Share Index rose 0.92 percent during the week to 252,113.41 points, from 249,804.56 points at the end of the previous week.

The index therefore gained approximately 2,308.85 points during the five trading sessions.

Equity market capitalisation closed Friday at N163.66 trillion, compared with N162.16 trillion at the end of the previous week.

Trading activity was particularly concentrated in selected equities during several sessions, with Fidelity Bank repeatedly emerging among the most actively traded stocks.

On Thursday, Fidelity Bank accounted for approximately 34 percent of total market volume after 335.20 million shares changed hands.

The bank again dominated activity on Friday with 212.77 million shares, equivalent to approximately 30 percent of the day’s total trading volume.
