Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to international efforts aimed at ending nuclear weapons testing and promoting global peace.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, made this known while addressing the United Nations General Assembly during the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session in New York.
Ibrahim stated that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and has never operated a programme aimed at developing nuclear weapons.
He also called for a review of Article 2(7) of the United Nations Charter, which upholds the principle of non-intervention in the domestic affairs of sovereign states.
According to him, the principle should not prevent the international community from taking action against countries that conduct nuclear weapons tests or possess weapons of mass destruction.
The Nigerian envoy noted that several international institutions and regulatory bodies have been established to monitor and address issues surrounding weapons of mass destruction.
He identified the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission as one of the institutions responsible for overseeing nuclear-related activities and maintaining the country’s regulatory framework.
Ibrahim further highlighted Nigeria’s cooperation with several countries, including Russia, China, France, South Korea and the United States, in the area of nuclear-related activities and international cooperation.
He said President Bola Tinubu had mandated him to reaffirm Nigeria’s willingness to strengthen partnerships and support global initiatives designed to eliminate nuclear weapons testing.
The ambassador stressed that Nigeria remains committed to working with the international community to promote a safer world free from the threat posed by nuclear weapons.
