Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has declared that national security remains the “fundamental foundation” for Nigeria’s unity and shared prosperity, as the country marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Musa made the declaration on Sunday at an inter-denominational church service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, attended by senior government officials, service chiefs, diplomats and Christian leaders.
Speaking amid continuing security challenges across parts of the country, the minister said Nigeria’s quest for peace and prosperity could not be separated from the ability of the government to guarantee security. “As we mark 66 years of our nationhood, our hope for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria remains unshakeable,” Musa said.
According to him, security should not be regarded merely as an operational responsibility of the armed forces. “Security is not merely an operational task; it is the fundamental foundation upon which national unity and shared prosperity are built,” he said.
Musa said the Armed Forces remained committed to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and restoring lasting peace across the country. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolutely committed to safeguarding our sovereignty and restoring lasting peace across all regions,” he said.
He also urged Nigerians to support security personnel and remain united in faith as the country seeks greater stability.
The minister’s remarks came as political and government leaders gathered for the service themed, “Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity.”
The event was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps and senior clergy.
Akpabio prayed for peace and harmony in the country, calling for concerted efforts to achieve sustainable national stability.
Akume, in his vote of thanks, shifted attention to Nigeria’s next major democratic milestone—the 2027 general elections. “As we look toward the 2027 elections ahead, let us remember that democracy is sustained by peace and unity,” Akume said.
