Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he decided to return to school at the age of 77, saying his decision was motivated by his desire to continue learning and gain a deeper understanding of Christian Theology.
Obasanjo, who is now 89, disclosed this during an interview with media personality Isbae U.
The former Nigerian leader enrolled at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where he pursued studies in Christian Theology.
He initially obtained a postgraduate diploma in Christian Theology from the institution in 2009. Five years later, in 2014, he returned to pursue a master’s degree in the same field.
Obasanjo said returning to school at an advanced age was partly aimed at demonstrating that education has no age limit and that people can continue acquiring knowledge regardless of their age.
According to him, his decision was not motivated solely by the desire to obtain another academic qualification. Rather, he wanted to understand God better and strengthen his ability to worship Him.
Explaining his motivation, Obasanjo said he wanted to lead by example by showing that learning should not stop because of age.
He said, “I went back to school at 77 years old to study Christian Theology, to show by example that there’s no age limit to education. I also wanted to learn more about God so I could worship Him better, and I enjoyed it.”
The former president’s decision highlights his long-standing interest in education and lifelong learning, even after leaving public office.
