A woman identified as Shobowale Balikis has been handed over to the police after she was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle contraband into the Ibara Custodial Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Balikis was intercepted by vigilant officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, at about 3:50pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026, while allegedly attempting to gain access to the custodial facility with the prohibited substance.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka, the substance identified as “Ethano” was allegedly concealed inside a bottled water pack and disguised as drinking water meant for an inmate.
The officers reportedly detected the suspected contraband before it could get into the custodial facility and reach the inmate population.
Following the interception, Balikis was handed over to the Nigerian Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The development came amid the Correctional Service’s efforts to prevent the infiltration of custodial facilities by prohibited items capable of undermining security, discipline and order.
Reacting to the incident, the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, PCC, PSC, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of contraband into custodial centres.
Adesina said the interception demonstrated the vigilance of correctional personnel and the determination of the Service to protect inmates, staff and the wider custodial system.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining safety, discipline and integrity across its custodial facilities.
The Controller further stressed the importance of preventing prohibited substances and other illicit items from finding their way into correctional centres, saying the Service would continue to uphold the rule of law.
The Ogun State Command assured members of the public that it would remain vigilant and intensify measures aimed at preventing contraband infiltration into its facilities.
The command also said persons found attempting to compromise the security and integrity of custodial centres would be subjected to appropriate legal processes.
