Pete Edochie Challenges Nollywood Actors: “If You’re My Equal, Come Out and Say It”
Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has stirred reactions after declaring that he considers himself to be above his colleagues in the Nigerian film industry.
The respected actor made the statement while appearing as a guest on comedian Isbae U’s online programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
During the interview, Edochie was asked to identify his favourite actor. Rather than single out a colleague, the veteran thespian said he viewed himself as bigger than the others.
His comments come against the backdrop of previous remarks by actor Yemi Solade, who claimed that he began his acting career before Edochie, despite the age difference between them.
Addressing claims from some actors about having greater seniority in the industry, Edochie said he had never considered it necessary to respond to such assertions.
He said: “People have been writing that they are older than me in the industry, but I don’t respond.
“Whoever said they are of the same level with me should come out and say it.”
The veteran actor was also asked about his status as a legend in Nollywood. Edochie admitted that he was not certain about how people defined the word but said he was pleased that his contributions to the industry continued to be recognised.
“I don’t know the definition of people’s legend, but I’m glad to be celebrated,” he said.
Edochie further disclosed that he had already established himself professionally before entering the acting industry.
He explained that he eventually retired from his previous career as a Director of Programmes before dedicating himself fully to acting.
With a career spanning several decades, Pete Edochie remains one of Nollywood’s most recognised veteran actors.
