Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi, India.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.
During his visit to India, Shettima participated in high-level sessions at the summit and held several bilateral meetings focused on strengthening Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic relations with other countries.
One of his key engagements was a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where discussions centred on renewed crude oil trade, investment opportunities, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, renewable energy and other strategic areas.
The Vice President also met with World Trade Organisation Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. During the engagement, he reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for multilateral cooperation and reforms aimed at creating a more inclusive global economic system.
At the BRICS summit, Shettima delivered President Tinubu’s message calling for reforms in global governance and international financial institutions.
He also presented Nigeria as a strategic gateway to Africa’s growing market through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Nigeria further used the summit to strengthen cooperation with BRICS member and partner countries in key sectors including agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and human-capital development.
