Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to travel to New Delhi, India, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit.
The summit is scheduled to take place this weekend at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and will bring together leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, alongside other invited dignitaries.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Shettima will participate in plenary and high-level sessions during the summit.
Nigeria is expected to use the meeting to strengthen its economic and diplomatic relationships with major international partners.
The country will particularly seek greater cooperation and investment opportunities in areas such as trade, energy, agriculture, solid minerals, technology and innovation.
Shettima is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders and senior officials from participating countries. The discussions will focus on expanding economic cooperation, attracting investments and creating new opportunities for Nigerian businesses.
Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025, giving the country an additional platform to strengthen South-South cooperation and engage major emerging economies on trade, investment, development financing and reforms to global institutions.
The Presidency said Nigeria’s participation is part of Tinubu’s efforts to expand the country’s international economic partnerships, attract foreign investment and open new markets for Nigerian products.
The government is expected to focus particularly on agriculture, energy, solid minerals and other non-oil sectors as it continues efforts to diversify the Nigerian economy.
India is chairing BRICS in 2026 under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Discussions at the summit are expected to cover political and security cooperation, economic and financial partnerships, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The summit also comes as BRICS marks 20 years since its establishment, with the bloc seeking to deepen practical cooperation among its expanding membership and partner countries.
