Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has described the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as a political platform that helped many Igbo politicians rise to prominence.
Soludo made the remarks on Saturday at the headquarters of Ekwusigo Local Government Area in Ozubulu, shortly after commissioning projects executed by the outgoing council chairman, Chinezie Obi.
The governor said it was unfortunate that some politicians who benefited from APGA’s platform had later defected to other political parties and were now questioning the relevance of the party.
According to him, APGA has played an important role in the political development of the South-East, particularly in Anambra State.
“APGA has been a visa through which many Igbo politicians rode to stardom. It is unfortunate that some of those who used the APGA visa to rise to stardom have lost focus and crossed over to other mushroom political parties and are now jumping up and down with the wishful thinking that APGA is no longer relevant,” Soludo said.
The governor also expressed concern over what he described as the tendency of the Igbo to concentrate their political support in one direction and subsequently complain about marginalisation at the federal level.
He argued that the South-East should adopt a more strategic approach to national politics by maintaining stronger engagement with the Federal Government.
Soludo said APGA’s position ahead of the 2027 elections was to support President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the presidency while seeking to retain the National Assembly and state assembly seats in Anambra.
He said the position was consistent with APGA’s mantra of “Progressives working together.”
The governor also dismissed suggestions that APGA had become irrelevant, pointing to the party’s performance in Anambra’s recently concluded local government elections.
He said APGA had secured all the local government chairmanship and councillorship positions in the state.
Soludo further commended the outgoing Ekwusigo council chairman, Chinezie Obi, for what he described as prudent management of resources and the execution of several development projects.
Among the projects commissioned were road works, CCTV installations and skill-acquisition centres aimed at benefiting young people and students in the area.
The governor said the projects demonstrated that local governments could undertake meaningful capital projects when available resources were properly managed.
He pledged to reward Obi for his performance in office and expressed confidence that the incoming council mayor, Ifeanyi Onuchukwu, would build on the achievements recorded by his predecessor.
Earlier, Obi commended Soludo for his leadership and said he had leveraged the governor’s development initiatives to execute projects in Ekwusigo.
He described the commissioned projects as a reflection of his vision for the local government.
The incoming mayor, Onuchukwu, said he had already prepared an action plan and would begin implementing it after his inauguration in line with his manifesto.
The event also featured the presentation of Community Service Awards to Obi and Onuchukwu by the youth wing of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC), led by its President-General, Ken Okoli.
