ECN Awards N1bn Solar Mini-Grid Project To Jigawa Varsity

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has approved a N1bn solar mini-grid project for the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State.
The project, under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Agenda for Alternative Energy, will provide a 500-kilowatt solar power system to improve electricity supply on the university campus.
The university’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Bello, said the project is expected to commence soon and be completed within three months.
The solar mini-grid is designed to generate alternative power for the institution and reduce its dependence on conventional electricity sources.
The development comes shortly after the commission approved 100 solar-powered streetlights for the university, with 50 already ready for installation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel, thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Director-General of the Energy Commission, Mustapha Abdullahi, for supporting the university.
Gumel also said the commission was prepared to collaborate with the university on renewable energy research.
The university said the solar project would strengthen its power infrastructure and support teaching, research and other campus activities.
