FAAN Plans 25-Day Runway Closure At Owerri Airport For Repairs

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing.

The proposed closure is expected to begin on October 20, 2026, although FAAN noted that the date is still subject to final confirmation.

The authority disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday and published on its official X account. The statement was signed by Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.

According to the agency, the planned closure became necessary following the deterioration of some sections of the runway, where potholes and cracks have developed. Recent heavy rainfall has reportedly worsened the damage, making urgent rehabilitation work necessary.

FAAN explained that the project would involve repairing damaged portions of the runway, treating cracks and resurfacing affected areas to improve its condition and ensure safer airport operations.

The authority said the rehabilitation was also aimed at preparing the airport for increased passenger traffic and flight operations during the Christmas travel period, when more people are expected to travel to and from the South-East.

Beyond the repairs, FAAN disclosed that the project would include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft.

The proposed extension is expected to increase the airport’s operational capacity and improve its ability to handle larger aircraft as air traffic to the region grows.

The agency added that the improvements would contribute to more efficient airport operations and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers using the facility.

Meanwhile, FAAN has advised passengers scheduled to travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport during the proposed closure period to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and information about possible alternative travel arrangements.

Passengers have been urged to stay informed as the authority works towards confirming the commencement date and implementing the planned rehabilitation project.
