“He Tried To Intercept The Truck Before He Was Struck” — Eyewitnesses Recount Death Of VIO Officer In Akure

A Vehicle Inspection Officer has reportedly been killed after being struck by a truck along Hospital Road in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident occurred opposite Mega Primary School, where the yet-to-be-identified officer was said to have attempted to stop the moving truck before he was hit and trapped beneath the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was already moving along the road when the officer attempted to intercept it, but the exact sequence of events that resulted in the fatal collision has yet to be officially established.

The incident immediately attracted residents, road users and colleagues of the deceased, who gathered around the truck as efforts were made to assess the situation.

A video recorded after the incident shows a white truck stationary on the road, with uniformed officers and other persons surrounding it. Some of those at the scene could be seen looking underneath the vehicle, while others stood by the roadside.

The footage does not capture the actual moment of impact and therefore does not independently establish how the collision occurred.

Witnesses said the officer became trapped beneath the truck after being struck, causing panic among residents and his colleagues at the scene.

People could be heard shouting as a crowd gathered around the vehicle following the incident.

The identity of the deceased officer had not been officially disclosed at the time of filing this report.

It was also not immediately clear why the officer attempted to stop the truck or whether the driver had been taken into custody.

Authorities had yet to issue a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether any mechanical failure, traffic violation or attempt to evade inspection contributed to the collision.
