Lagos Arrests 62 Beggars, Children In Ajah, Lekki

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has apprehended 62 individuals during an enforcement operation targeting street begging in the Ajah and Lekki areas of the state.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on X, saying the operation led to the arrest of 29 street beggars and 33 children allegedly being exploited for illegal street begging.
He said all those apprehended had been transferred to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
“A total of 62 individuals, comprising 29 street beggars and 33 children allegedly being exploited for illegal street begging, were apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps during an enforcement operation in the Ajah and Lekki areas of Lagos State.
“They have all been transferred to the appropriate authorities for necessary action,” Wahab wrote.
The latest operation came days after personnel of the corps apprehended 215 street beggars in another enforcement exercise across Lagos.
Wahab said in a post on X on Saturday that the earlier operation formed part of intensive efforts to address street begging and the activities of street urchins.
He said the 215 individuals comprised 152 males, 46 females and 17 young adults.
According to the commissioner, the operations were part of the state government’s efforts to maintain public order, promote environmental sanitation and ensure safer and more orderly public spaces across Lagos.
