Lecturer Dies In Hotel After Meeting 21-Year-Old Woman

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after he was found unconscious in a hotel room following a reported encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

Uwuigbe reportedly lodged at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Sunday, October 5, 2026, where he met the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The lecturer reportedly sent Jacob out of the room to purchase water for him, but she returned to find him lying dead inside the room.

The incident was reported to the Edo State Police Command, which said three people had been arrested in connection with the case.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development, saying police received a report at about 8pm on October 5 concerning the death of the university lecturer.

She said Jacob, the hotel owner and the hotel manager were subsequently taken into custody as investigation commenced.

Ikoedem said Uwuigbe’s body had been deposited at the mortuary of Oriaifo Memorial Hospital for further examination.

The police have not disclosed the cause of the lecturer’s death, while investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the university confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but distanced the institution from the circumstances surrounding his death.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the incident occurred outside the institution and involved no student of the university.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.
