Madonna University Expels Nursing Students Over Viral Hospital Video

…NANS Begs Management To Replace Expulsion With Stern Warning, Undertaking

Madonna University, Nigeria, has expelled some of its nursing students over a viral video recorded during their clinical posting at a hospital, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) appealing to the institution to reconsider the punishment.

The students reportedly faced disciplinary action after the video, which was filmed in a hospital environment, surfaced online and generated widespread attention.

The video was accompanied by the caption, “No sick oo, nah Gen Z full hospital,” a statement that reportedly triggered concerns over the students’ conduct in a sensitive clinical environment.

Following the expulsion, NANS appealed to the university management to rescind the punishment and replace it with a stern warning and other corrective disciplinary measures.

The students are undergraduate nursing students whose academic training requires regular clinical postings in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

NANS acknowledged that the students’ conduct was inappropriate but argued that expulsion could have serious consequences for their education and future careers.

In its appeal, the students’ body urged the university to exercise clemency and give the affected students an opportunity to continue their studies under stringent conditions.

NANS suggested that the students could be required to sign undertakings not to repeat the conduct and warned that any further violation could attract more severe disciplinary action.

The association maintained that disciplinary measures should, where appropriate, serve a corrective purpose rather than permanently derail the academic careers of the affected students.

The development has also renewed concerns about the use of social media by students, particularly the recording and publication of videos from sensitive environments such as hospitals.

Hospitals and clinical settings are subject to professional, ethical and privacy considerations, making appropriate conduct by students and healthcare workers particularly important during clinical postings.

For nursing students, clinical training forms an important part of professional preparation, exposing them to real-life healthcare environments and requiring them to observe standards of conduct expected of members of the profession.

However, NANS argued that the university should consider a more rehabilitative approach to the disciplinary matter while ensuring that the students understand the seriousness of their conduct.

The association appealed to the management to review the expulsion and allow the students to complete their education subject to strict disciplinary conditions.

As of the time of filing this report, Madonna University had not publicly indicated whether it would review the expulsion or accept the appeal by NANS.
