Three persons have been burnt to death following a midnight collision between a passenger bus conveying day-old chicks and a truck loaded with sacks along the Oko-Olowo axis of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The fatal accident reportedly occurred around midnight on Thursday when the two vehicles collided, triggering a fire that engulfed the bus and trapped its three occupants.

Sources said the truck was travelling from the Shao direction when its driver allegedly attempted to make a U-turn towards Oko-Olowo.

The manoeuvre reportedly placed the truck in the path of the oncoming passenger bus, which was said to be travelling from Lagos, resulting in a violent collision.

The impact triggered a fire that rapidly spread through the bus, leaving the three occupants trapped inside as the vehicle was consumed by flames.

All three occupants were reportedly burnt to death in the incident.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene early Friday morning to evacuate the remains of the victims.

The circumstances surrounding the crash, including the identities of the deceased and the extent of damage to the vehicles, were yet to be officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kabiru Kazeem, told LEADERSHIP on Friday that the accident occurred.

Kazeem reportedly promised to provide additional information about the crash but had yet to release further details as of the time of filing this report.

The tragedy adds to concerns over fatal road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles and commercial passenger transport, particularly incidents in which collisions result in fires and leave occupants with little opportunity to escape.

The FRSC is expected to provide further details as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue.
