“Tinubu’s House of Commotion”: Adebayo Slams FG’s 30-Day Petrol Discount as Confused, Baseless

Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the Federal Government’s planned 30-day petrol discount through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing it as a policy with no legal foundation.

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, had earlier announced that the NNPCL would sell petrol at cost for 30 days. He stressed that the measure did not amount to a return of the fuel subsidy.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adebayo said the move lacks legal backing and offers no credible plan to ease the hardship Nigerians have endured. He dismissed it as a flashy gesture without substance.

According to him, the government has not cited any law authorising the discount, set up a dedicated account in the Ministry of Finance for the intervention, or presented a clear implementation framework.

He also pointed out that none of the officials who announced the policy represents the NNPCL, the agency expected to carry it out.

Adebayo compared the announcement to Fuji House of Commotion, the popular 1990s television comedy, and said it reflects a confused administration.

“What they are presenting is Tinubu’s house of commotion. It does not make any sense in any way. One month is not short term; it is not medium term; it is not long term; it is a flash in the moment,” he said.

“Long and short, it looks to me like the government is genuinely now and sincerely confused because they have created problems for themselves,” he added.
