Suspected bandits have carried out another deadly attack in Kwara State, killing five forest guards in Nuku village, located in Kaiama Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 10, 2026, when heavily armed assailants stormed the community around 3:00 a.m., firing gunshots indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.
According to a local source who spoke anonymously due to security concerns, the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for several hours without any form of resistance. During the assault, they targeted both residents and newly recruited forest guards.
“They came through their usual route in large numbers and began shooting immediately. Within a short time, several innocent people, including the forest guards, were killed,” the source said.
The attackers also destroyed property in the community. Motorcycles belonging to the forest guards were set ablaze, while patrol vehicles used by mobile police officers were reportedly burnt.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had not released an official statement. The command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said she had yet to be briefed on the incident but promised to provide updates once more information becomes available.
The latest attack has intensified fear among residents, who say insecurity in the area continues to worsen.
This incident comes just weeks after a similar attack on Woro and nearby Nuku communities, where over 200 people were reportedly killed and about 176 others abducted, including women and children.
Tension has further increased following the circulation of a recent video showing abducted villagers pleading for help. In the footage, victims, including women and children, appealed to the government for urgent intervention, saying they had been held captive since early February.
One of the abductors in the video claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, stating that the victims were allowed to speak so authorities could hear their pleas.
The Kwara State Government had earlier reacted to the situation, expressing concern and assuring residents that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those abducted. Officials, however, noted that conflicting reports had made it difficult to confirm the exact number of victims.
Despite these assurances, residents say the latest attack highlights the continued vulnerability of rural communities, as families of abducted persons remain in distress awaiting their safe return.
