Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has clarified the reason behind a recent meeting between a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.
Speaking on Wednesday, Makinde said the visit, led by the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP, was aimed at showing solidarity with the ADC following recent political developments, including court actions and the party’s protest against the electoral body.
The governor addressed journalists after the meeting, which lasted several hours and took place at the Abuja residence of former Senate President David Mark.
“We visited the ADC leadership in solidarity. Considering the recent happenings in the political space, including court cases and the protest, we felt it was necessary to stand together and reaffirm our commitment to a transparent and credible democratic process,” Makinde said.
The meeting brought together key opposition figures from both parties and is widely seen as a strategic engagement ahead of future elections. Notable attendees included former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, and Babangida Aliyu.
Also present were former Information Minister Jerry Gana and PDP National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja.
The closed-door talks came shortly after ADC supporters staged the #OccupyINEC protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, underscoring growing political tensions and possible opposition alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
