Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, recalling his role during the period he was placed under house arrest in 1995.
Speaking in an interview with News Central, Obasanjo reflected on the difficult period during the military regime of the late Sani Abacha, when he was detained and restricted under house arrest.
He noted that despite the tense and dangerous circumstances, several individuals supported him in various ways, helping to ensure his safety. Among those he singled out was the current police chief, Olatunji Disu, whom he credited for contributing to his survival during the ordeal.
According to him, the experience remains one of the most challenging moments of his life, and he has not forgotten those who showed him kindness and protection at the time.
“I have to specially acknowledge you. Maybe the reason I am alive today is because you were among those who kept me safe when I was under house arrest,” he said.
Beyond expressing gratitude, the former president also used the opportunity to comment on Nigeria’s security challenges, renewing his call for the establishment of state police.
He argued that decentralising policing would allow officers better knowledge of their environments and improve response times to emerging threats. He maintained that such a structure could help curb insecurity more effectively by addressing problems before they escalate.
Obasanjo stressed that Nigeria must adopt practical and urgent measures to improve security nationwide, insisting that state policing remains a viable option for strengthening law enforcement.
