Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Kanayo Uzuegbu, who headed Zone 9 Police Command in Umuahia, Abia State, has passed away after a battle with cancer.
The death of the senior police officer was announced on Sunday by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, during an event held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.
Governor Otti disclosed that Uzuegbu died following a prolonged illness and led dignitaries and attendees in observing a minute of silence in honour of the late police chief.
Expressing his condolences, the governor described Uzuegbu as a dedicated, disciplined and hardworking officer who served the Nigeria Police Force and the nation with distinction throughout his career.
According to Otti, the late AIG demonstrated unwavering commitment, professionalism and patriotism in the discharge of his duties, earning the respect of colleagues, subordinates and members of the public.
The governor noted that Uzuegbu’s death represents a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Nigeria Police Force and the wider security community.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased officer’s soul and asked God to grant comfort and strength to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones during the difficult period.
Governor Otti further stated that the passing of the senior police officer has left a deep void within the security architecture of the state and the entire Zone 9 Command.
The news of Uzuegbu’s death has thrown officers and personnel under Zone 9 Police Command into mourning. The command, headquartered in Umuahia, oversees police formations across the region that operated under his leadership.
Tributes have continued to pour in from members of the police community and other stakeholders, many of whom described the late AIG as an exemplary officer whose contributions to policing and security will not be forgotten.
